The Brother Heavy D
Terrible loss. 44 years old.
We in the ATL can be proud to say his last show ever was here, at the BET Hip-Hop Awards taping.
Anybody who had a joint called "Don't Curse" was unique in the hip-hop game, and you didn't see this brother beefin' with other cats or talking badly about his sisters.
One of my favorite memories is when I was in college in ATL in a seminar led by Dr. Marcellus Barksdale of Morehouse. He was trying to make his way through the desks to the back of the room to run the overhead projector, and blurted out, "Make room for the Overweight Lover!"
Blessings to you and your family, Heav. Go ahead on that Peaceful Journey.

Occupy Atlanta and Atlanta Hip-Hop Day
The list of artists for this festival was on the wack side. Felt to me like the organizer was profiteering on the hip-hop, and not really trying to put it down for the genre and the people.
See what happened when the festival (which had not completed its permitting process), the City, and the headz from Occupy Atlanta interacted today:

Tribe Called Quest Documentary
Went to Atlanta opening night for the Beats, Rhymes and Life documentary on 7/22. Full theatre and people were amped. Probably 2/3 of the people stayed all the way through the credits, and there were 3 different rounds of applause at the end.
Some parts were funny, some brought tears. I told wifey it was like the soundtrack to my young adulthood. Have seen some so-so reviews, but definitely recommend.
On the spiritual tip, there was an abject absence of forgiveness and compassion between Tip and Phife. It was sad to see. No detriment to their quality as MCs, but I left disappointed in the broken relationships, and conscious of the pathology generated where Christ is not a central commonality and focus.
Big up forgiveness and compassion!

Prayer Request
Prayer Warriors,
Please pray for discernment for my wife and I in finding a new home church. We want it to be grace- and Gospel-centered, with solid doctrine, teaching and practices. It has been a long process. We are having difficulty making a decision. We would really appreciate your intercession.
One.

Japan
We just came back from a couple of weeks in Japan. Outstanding, respectful, diligent people. Word life. Contrary to what one would expect having ingested a lot of sensationalized, fear-mongering Western media coverage, our trip was essentially without incident (Tokyo and points further south and west). That is in no way to minimize the incalculable disaster in northern Japan and its effects on the whole country, but, on the whole, Japan is keepin' it movin'.
A lot of media focus has shifted to the nuclear situation, and away from the humanitarian issues raised by the preceding natural disasters. Don't forget about the people of northern Japan in the ways we have predictably done with the residents of New Orleans, Haiti, etc.
I recommend a concerted effort to continue giving through entities recommended on the site of The Japan Times newspaper, a fly English-language daily infusing some reasoned dialogue into the morass. Further, let's make a commitment to ongiong intercession for the loss and devastation experienced by the Japanese people.
Entered one hip-hop record/clothing store in the city of Nara. They were bumpin' a Camp Lo joint I had not heard before, followed by some classic Guru. As always, goosebumps to experience that in every corner of the world.

I ain't with this east-, west-, north- or south-side."
